AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD TRANSFUSION (SELF DONATION)
Autologous
Blood transfusion information, or self donation of your own Blood to
yourself, is the collection and re-infusion (re-transfusion) of the
patient's own Blood or Blood components. Recommended by the American
Medical Association's Council on Scientific Affairs, and described
as the safest Blood product by Blood banks themselves, it clearly
should be the transfusion therapy of choice. The alternative,
allogeneic (publicly donated) Blood, from Blood donors that may be
unknown to you, on the other hand, is collected from a Blood donor
other than the patient, and transfused into that patient. Cord Blood
and Stem cell Blood therapies, if you use your own Blood products
would be autologous. When a family member donates to you, it is near
autologous (Blood family relation) donation of stem cells or cord
Blood to you.

Although
not completely risk free, autologous Blood is the safest form of
Blood transfusion. Exclusive use of a patient’s own Blood eliminates
reactions due to donor recipient incompatibility and precludes
exposure to transfusion transmitted infection. There is a vast body
of knowledge on human Blood. There are literally hundreds of areas
of Blood research with large sums of money invested. Even so, every
year, there are discoveries rendering the standard conventions
unusable, or even dangerous. Many of the antibodies in donated
Blood, which develop when people are exposed to diseases, may be
undetectable despite intensive testing, and these can cause
transfusion reactions in patients receiving the Blood. While Blood
bank tests greatly reduce the risks of acquiring certain infectious
diseases, these risks can not be eliminated entirely. Your own Blood
is the safest Blood for you.
Over the
last several years, an increased awareness of diseases transmitted
by allogeneic Blood has resulted in a dramatic increase in
autologous Blood transfusion. Approximately 16 million units of
Blood are donated annually. Of those Blood donations, over 600,000
are autologous Blood donations. This number of autologous donations
is growing each year. Clinical research and practice in autologous
Blood use have also grown in recent years, providing new insights
into the issues involved.
Donating
Blood to the community is important. Donating Blood to yourself can
be very important!

This year,
the United States will be short more than 250,000 of the one-pint
units of Blood that Americans will need. About that same amount of
Blood is imported from abroad each year to fill Americans' needs.
This estimate is from the non-profit National Blood Data Resource
Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Imported Blood..... hmmm! Other
credible estimates indicate imports of up to 20% of the total
supply.
Autologous Blood and your Cord
Blood, is stored in Blood bags. The Autologous Blood bag replaced
the pint glass bottle for Blood in the 20th century. Your family has
unique Blood. Autologous Cord Blood is important. Discount Cord
Blood registry is also important to Cord Blood discount information.
Cord Blood is important to our Bodies. The Cord Blood registry and
Cord Blood information. When our bodies lose a little Blood from a
minor wound, the platelets cause the Blood to clot so that the
bleeding stops. Because newly produced Blood is always being made on
the inside of your bones, a healthy body can replace the lost Blood.
When our bodies lose Blood through a major wound, that Blood is most
often, due to modern medicine, replaced by the transfusion of Blood
from Blood donors.
Blood is called the fluid of
life. Blood transports oxygen from the lungs throughout body tissue.
Blood also moves carbon dioxide from body tissue to the lungs. Blood
is called the fluid of growth. Blood transports nourishment from the
digestive tract and hormones from glands throughout the body. Blood
is the fluid of health. Blood carries disease fighting substances to
the tissue and waste to the kidneys.
Autologous Blood Transfusion is a
process allowing you to receive a transfusion of your own Blood.
Your Blood is removed at scheduled intervals and stored. Your body
will then make more Blood to replace the donated and stored Blood.
Autologous Blood donation has the advantage that all of the Blood
that is put into your body is a perfect match for you. Therefore
there can be no ill effects such as fever, rashes or allergic
reactions which can occasionally occur after receiving Blood from a
stranger or a Blood bank. Autologous Blood transfusion also carries
no risk of transmitting infection such as Hepatitis or AIDS.
Remember,
we are assured that all Blood is safe. To me, 'safe' is a relative
term. I know for certain that my Blood is the safest for me when I
use it for myself. |
